IRS Extends Tax Filing Deadline

But Maryland Residents Beware: State Tax Filing Differs

On March 17th, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from the traditional date of April 15th, 2021, to May 17th, 2021.

But Maryland residents, be advised: the Maryland state income tax filing deadline differs—you get an extra month.
On March 11th, State Comptroller Peter Franchot extended the filing deadline to July 15th.

  • Do note that for those who need to pay quarterly estimated tax payments, April 15th is still your deadline.
  • This extension also means that May 17th is the new last day to make a 2020 IRA contribution, as well as the deadline for filing for a tax return extension (the extended deadline being October 15th 2021).
